To all the moms, today and every day

As most of us are arguably aware, today is Mother’s Day.

If you’re just realizing today’s occasion and haven’t yet gotten your mom something to commemorate her special day, allow this post to serve as a prompt to get your ass to the store and get her some lovely flowers.

Mother’s Day, if the title didn’t suggest it, serves as an opportunity to show some additional appreciation for all of the moms out there. Really, though, moms and everything they do for us should be honoured and appreciated each and every day, not strictly on mothers day, as I’m sure most of you would agree with me.

Regardless of what motherhood looks like for you or the next person, today is a day to recognize the relentless efforts put forth by moms, step-moms, aunts, grandmothers, sisters, cousins, foster moms, surrogates, adoptive moms, caregivers, and any other figure I’m failing to mention that falls into the umbrella category of ‘mom.’ Moms really are the shit, and without them, the world would be a rather desolate place.

Speaking about my mom, in particular, she truly embodies everything I aspire to be when I’m a mother one day. She is strong (a two-time breast cancer survivor), courageous, witty, loving, willing to listen, hard-working, dedicated, caring, generous, selfless, intelligent and beautiful, among many other wonderful characteristics. It would be an honour to be half the mother she is to my own children one day, and she represents everything a mom should be.

Thank you to all of the moms out there, today and every day. We would all be lost without you, and I for one cannot fathom my life being as blessed as it is without my mom’s presence in it. Moms are superheros in plain sight, simply put, and we take them for granted far too often.

Happy, happy Mother’s Day.
