Anyone who knows me personally is probably aware of the rather unfortunate experience I encountered when I had both of my helixes pierced. I was actually getting a tattoo touched up when I caught wind the piercing artist had no further clients for the day, and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get my helixes pierced. She did warn me not to get both done at the same time, but because I’m a dumb fuck, I said go for it, and soon embarked on an incredibly miserable journey with my ears.
Sleeping was a nightmare (I slept like Dracula for months) and the piercings did not want to heal up too quickly. One of the two ended up getting so badly infected the infection spread into the lymph nodes in my neck, and when my doctor asked me why I hadn’t removed the piercing, I explained how it cost me $70 and I was not about to let that go to waste.
She, naturally, was not impressed. I’m Dutch and Jewish, so you can’t blame me.
Anyways, fast forward to now, and I’ve had my helixes pierced for about five years or so. They’re a hell of a lot better than they once were, but I still struggle to find earrings that don’t irritate the holes. I tried studs initially, but because I was tired of getting my hair caught in them, I switched to small hoops. They’ve been a bit better, but they’re still not great.
If I could go back, I would not get my helixes pierced knowing the shitstorm coming my way, but I do like how they look. Was it worth it? Absolutely not. I can’t say for certain I’ve enjoyed battling with these bastards just to get them to somewhat behave, but perhaps in time my fondness for them will grow.
