Allow me to begin this post by admitting that while I am an avid fan of the television series The Witcher, I have not yet had the privilege of reading the books the show is based on, written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Given my English background, I can’t help but feel like a bit of a cheat; normally, I prefer to read books prior to watching a television or film adaptation because so many details are left out. I actually started watching the first season of The Witcher and realized halfway through that the series is based on Sapkowski’s novels.
I enjoyed the first two seasons of The Witcher, and out of the two, I would have to say the first is my preference. I just finished watching part one of the third season, with the latter half premiering later on this month, and while I certainly did like it, I found it a wee bit confusing.
Again, my confusion could be a result of not reading the books, but for me, season three, part one almost felt a little rushed. I felt as though there were unanswered questions from the second season that the third completely overlooked, and I also had a bit of an issue accepting Geralt and Ciri’s rather quick forgiveness of Yen considering the shit she pulled at The Battle of Sodden.
Aside from some holes in the plot, I will say that part one of the third season is arguably the most visually impressive yet. I’ve read some reviews stating the CGI in the third season is shit, but I totally disagree. If anything, I found the cinematography of this season to be better than the first two, if not comparable, at least, and I also thoroughly enjoyed character progression in the context of Jaskier.
Anyone who follows The Witcher knows Henry will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, so do yourself a favour and enjoy his final season.
