Without sounding like someone who neglects their health, I started experiencing pain in my lower back and deep within the front of my hips, simultaneously, a few months ago. I didn’t think much of it at the time, and figured I had tweaked some muscles working out or doing something on the farm.
The reason I don’t normally try and address a ‘new’ injury, ache or pain immediately is because I already have a lot of each courtesy of Lyme disease. It can be tricky trying to differentiate what is new at times, so I don’t typically get too excited when an additional symptom occurs.
After a few weeks, I noticed the pain seemed to be worsening, but only in my hips – not so much in my back. I found that my lower back would be bad on random days, or after doing a lot of heavy lifting, but the hip issue continued. It’s now to the point that my hip joints literally feel as though they’re being held together with rubber bands; I don’t know how else to explain the sensation, but my hips are ridiculously sore and tight.
I figured I would do some research and attempt to pinpoint what specific muscle is giving me grief in my hips, and I made a fascinating discovery. The muscle that is causing my hips to feel like bungee cords without tremendous slack is called the psoas muscle, and it just so happens that this same muscle in the pelvic region also extends all the way around our lower back.
Perhaps this stems from my lack of medical and anatomy knowledge, but I was fucking floored to discover that the pain I’m having is absolutely connected seeing as it’s the same damn muscle. I was entirely unaware of the location of this particular muscle, and its reach, but I was relieved to learn that my pain is, at least, narrowed down to one muscle as opposed to multiple.
If you, like me, are experiencing pain in your lower back and your hips, there is a strong probability that you, too, have aggravated your psoas muscle.
