Here’s what to make when it’s too hot to cook

If you happen to be a resident of Southern Ontario, I do not need to inform you of how damn hot it has been as of late. Back in May, we experienced a week of blazing heat, only for that to be followed by unusually cool weather for June.

Apparently, Mother Nature was allowing her suspense to build for this current onslaught of heat, and man, she has really outdone herself.

I don’t mind dry heat, but humidity is a whole other can of worms. There really is nothing that compares to walking outside and having difficulty breathing, in addition to spontaneously sweating as soon as the sun hits your skin.

Those of us who work outdoors have not been enjoying this ridiculous, relentless heat, if I may speak for us all, and by the time the workday is done, the last thing I feel like doing is standing over a hot stove to cook dinner.

I highly doubt I’m alone in this sentiment, so I thought I would do some brainstorming to come up with some innovative ideas pertaining to what to make for a meal when it really is too hot to cook.

I doubt I’ll encounter much agreement with this idea, but salads really are a fantastic option when you can’t read a recipe thanks to the sweat in your eyes. If you’re able to incorporate all of the major food groups into a salad without having to fire up the oven, you’re winning.

If you know there is a heatwave approaching, before it arrives, doing some meal prep would be handy. I realize this option is not the most realistic, but it’s still an option.

Consider preparing a large charcuterie board for dinner, equipped with crackers, cheeses, meats and dips and savour a delicious but chilled meal.

What are your go-to’s when it’s too hot to cook?
