Looking for a design program? Consider Canva

Not to age myself, but going back quite a few years ago, I once worked as an intern for CAA in St. Catharine’s, Ontario. The internship in question was a mandatory component of the post-graduate public relations program I was enrolled in at the time at Niagara College.

I absolutely loved my internship at CAA. I met some truly wonderful folks and actually ended up becoming good friends with my mentor who I still keep in touch with. One of my roles in my internship was to assist with social media posts, and while I knew I needed to find some sort of design program to help with the graphics, I wasn’t entirely sure of where to begin looking.

My mentor recommended a program to me called Canva. I had never heard of it, but because I was intrigued I decided to check it out to see if it would meet the specific criteria I had to create social media graphics. I couldn’t believe the fact that the services offered by Canva were, and remain to be, free, considering how many templates, tools, effects, etc. this site offers.

Just some of the examples of what you can create using Canva include presentations, videos, resumes, Instagram posts, posters, flyers, agendas, logos, documents, thumbnails, invitations, clothing designs, and Facebook cover photos, to name a few. As I said, it is free, however, if you want to get really savvy with your designs, some of the features and tools are marked as ‘pro’, meaning some features you do have to pay for.

This site is a goldmine for anyone who works in the design realm, but also for anyone in general looking to create some sort of graphic. I’ve even used it to make birthday cards – it is absolutely worth checking out, whether you think it applies to you or not.
