Is this emergency service enabled on your iPhone?

I spend more time looking at Instagram reels than I would like to admit, but, occasionally, you stumble across one that actually shares some rather significant information. I came across one of these said reels yesterday and immediately shared it with my sister and husband; I was entirely unaware that iPhone offers this feature, and I would wager most other people are, too.

The reel in question was uploaded by sarahdhetrick. Within the video, she explains that this iPhone feature saved her life:

“Anyone who drives needs to know about this SOS feature. I had no idea it existed or that it was even turned on…nor would I ever have thought I’d need a feature like this. If you’re in a severe car crash, your iPhone can detect the impact. The Crash Detection feature will give you 20 seconds to respond and say you’re okay. If you don’t, it will call 911 and provide your coordinates. Your phone will sound a loud alarm and state that your vehicle has been in an accident and the driver is unresponsive. After 911 hangs up, your phone will send a text to all of your emergency contacts with a pin to your location. If you move locations, your phone will update your contacts with your new location. I never in a million years thought I would be unconscious in my car after a severe car accident, but that just goes to show you how important it is to be prepared for any emergency. The Crash Detection feature is available in the iPhone 14 or higher, but double-check to make sure that it’s turned on and that you’ve set your emergency contacts. It could save your life like it saved mine.”

My own iPhone is too old to support this new feature, but anyone who owns an iPhone 14 or higher would be smart to enable this. To do so, open ‘settings’ on your phone, then click ’emergency SOS.’ Scroll down a little bit until you see ‘call after severe crash’ and enable it (turn it on). Ensure you have added your emergency contacts in the Health app on your phone to set the entire feature up, and your emergency contacts will sync with this ‘call after severe crash’ feature.
