Is ‘Conclave’ worth seeing?

I am a born and raised Catholic, and attending church weekly with my mom is a time we both cherish and appreciate. I would consider my mom’s faith to be a bit stronger than my own in the sense she is normally chomping at the bit to see any sort of religious movie when they’re released, whereas I, normally, am not.

I sort of shot myself in the foot by telling my mom about a movie I saw a trailer for back in the summer titled ‘Conclave.’ I failed to consider how she would likely be asking me to join her to see this film, and sure enough, when she caught wind that it was playing in our local theatre, she asked me to accompany her.

My mom and I went to the theatres a couple of nights ago to see ‘Conclave,’ and to be entirely honest, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I would not watch it again because I found it to be rather slow and dull most of the time, but I will say that this film shows an interesting, inside perspective of what occurs when a new pope must be elected in Rome.

Ralph Fiennes plays Thomas Lawrence, a Cardinal, who is essentially responsible for ensuring the right man is picked to become the next pope. His performance, as usual, is phenomenal, and if it weren’t for his presence in this movie, along with Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, I doubt I would have enjoyed it to the extent I did.

Without running the plot for anyone who wishes to see it, allow me to acknowledge that from what I have read and observed so far, the Catholic Church as an entity is not in favour of this film. If you watch it, you will arguably understand why.
