How about a Smoked Sausage Skillet for dinner tonight?

I started to make dinner before I sat down to write this post, and one of the things I am currently cooking as I simultaneously write this is smoked cheddar sausage.

I should arguably clarify that I am personally not cooking the sausage; my air fryer is.

Blaine and I love smoked sausage, and we enjoy it once a week. Normally, I mix the sausage in with some rice and cheese of some sort, and while this is delicious, I’ve been thinking about trying something new with smoked sausage. I found a recipe for an Easy Smoked Sausage Skillet from allrecipes.com, and because it looks rather tasty, I wanted to share it with all of you.

“Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 (14 ounce) package Hillshire Farm® Smoked Sausage, diagonally cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 1 large red bell pepper, sliced thin
  • 1 small yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 1 (10 ounce) package frozen broccoli, thawed
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • 2 cups instant rice
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

“Directions

  1. Heat olive oil and crushed garlic in a large skillet. Stir in smoked sausage slices and cook until browned on all sides.
  2. Add pepper, onion, broccoli, chicken broth, and tomato sauce. Simmer until vegetables are tender and the liquid is absorbed, about 10 minutes.
  3. In the meantime, cook rice according to package instructions.
  4. Stir cooked rice into the skillet, sprinkle with cheese, and serve,” the recipe states.

This recipe is, in essence, a fancier version of what I make, but what is great about smoked sausage is its versatility. You could throw some in soup, in a pasta dish, in rice, or on a bun; it pairs well with just about anything, and it doesn’t require a tremendous amount of effort to prepare if you’re using a store-bought version.

Smoked sausage has the potential to be successfully incorporated into just about any recipe, and in this context, it’s the star of the show.
