The wrath of words

I thought I would use this post as an opportunity to remind everyone of just how hurtful words can be. I would argue that these days, verbal assault and bullying are worse than ever before as a result of a toxic combination of free will and a lack of accountability, specifically via online platforms, and it doesn’t seem to be improving anytime soon.

I truly believe that many people are entirely oblivious to just how hurtful words can be. Yes, they’re simply words and don’t have the ability to inflict physical harm; they do, however, have the ability to inflict tremendous mental harm, and sometimes, the effects can last long after the remark is uttered.

I don’t think I have ever seen such vile remarks and statements in social media comment sections to the degree of nastiness they’ve now reached, and again, this issue is perpetually worsening because there is no accountability when it comes to expression via social media. Granted, if you post something truly hateful, someone might flag your post and report it, but the general outcome is a ban from your account for a little bit. What the hell does that teach the people uttering these awful comments? Not a whole lot, in my own humble opinion.

So many people these days are living life blissfully unaware of how actions, and words, generate consequences when done in a poor manner, and I have a major issue with it. Why is no one being held accountable for this disgusting behaviour? Words or not, they can be hateful, atrocious and hard to forget, and I think some people could tremendously benefit from this very basic reminder.

Be kind. If that is too difficult for you, keep your mouth shut and your fingers away from your keyboard. It isn’t rocket science.

  1. Unfortunately, it’s more fun for people to be mean, especially insecure people – which most are. In addition, it’s easier to hide behind a computer screen, so you suffer very little consequences, if at all, when writing mean comments. This issue is probably going to get a lot worse as time goes on….

    1. You are absolutely correct. Bullies are almost always individuals with issues of their own they never resolved. You’re also correct about the likelihood of this matter becoming even worse, which is so sad. Thank you for reading.
