When it comes to French fries, I imagine a lot of people would argue that homemade is the best kind. And, understandably so; a lot of foods are often the best tasting when they’re made by our hands as opposed to a machine in a factory, and many of us tend to appreciate food to a further degree when it is homemade.
As much as I wish I could whip up homemade French fries each and every time we eat them, there are days when the task is simply not feasible due to time constraints and other responsibilities. So, I often make store-bought, frozen fries, and because at this point my husband and I have tried most brands carried by major grocers, I figured I would share our opinion on which brand is best.
The number one brand for French fries, in our opinion, is McCain, specifically their Bistro Selects collection. Even more specifically, McCain’s Bistro Selects Beer Battered Fries are some of the best I have ever had, and that’s including homemade ones. They cook perfectly in the air fryer – I cook them at 400F for 15 minutes, open up the air fryer basket, mix them around a bit with some tongs, and cook them for another seven minutes at 400F. They’re crispy on the outside while still soft on the inside, and they have a lovely crisp to them with a ton of flavour.
The McCain Bistro Selects Super Crisps Straight Cut French Fries come in at a close second place to the first.
We also really like Cavendish’s Spicy Cracked Pepper Straight Cut Fries, but they tend to get quite mushy no matter how I prepare them. Perhaps they’re best when they’re deep-fried, but even despite their slight sogginess, their flavour is great.
