Have you seen Matty Matheson’s ‘Just A Dash’?

Despite strongly associating with the identity of a creature of habit, every now and then, something new and exciting on Netflix catches my eye. I have my comfort shows as much as the next suspected autistic, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine almost always playing on repeat, but when I tuned into Netflix a few nights ago and saw a new show titled Just A Dash being recommended to me as a suggested watch, I felt adventurous and decided to give it a go.

Just A Dash is hosted by Matthy Matheson, a Canadian chef who actually made an appearance in the very popular television series known as The Bear. He was the executive chef at a restaurant in Toronto that closed in 2019, and I think he began his Just A Dash series following the closure of the restaurant.

I used to obsessively watch cooking shows when I was younger, and I haven’t tuned into one in a hot minute, mainly because watching cooking shows makes me hungry when I’m actually not. The trailer I watched for Just A Dash was more than intriguing, however, and so I said fuck it and figured one episode couldn’t hurt.

This was earlier this week, and now I’m halfway through season one.

Matty Matheson is a damn Canadian treasure, and I’m sad it took me 30 years to discover him. He is batshit insane and has an absolutely wicked and warped sense of humour, and one episode actually had Blaine and me in tears from laughing so hard. You never quite know what is going to happen in any given episode, and his random and unprompted outbursts are comedic gold.

Matty is also remarkably refreshing in the sense that he doesn’t edit mistakes out of his episodes. He shows everything, the good and the bad, and his realistic approach to cooking is sure to grab your attention if his humour isn’t enough for you.
