Recognizing the potential of a garden shed

If you happened to read the title of today’s entry and found yourself a wee bit perplexed, I really can’t say I blame you. Allow me to state that the title is intended to be a bit ominous, and my hope is that the vagueness of it will be enough of a hook to draw people in. If you’re reading this now, then I am pleased to report my method worked.

I came across an account on Instagram recently that has allowed me to recognize how much damn potential something as simple as a garden shed possesses. The account, @excusemyreading, features a woman who quite literally transformed a garden shed into a cozy little reading den, and you can see one of her many videos here.

She has devoted most of her walls to shelving areas for her books, and has added a few pieces of furniture, like rocking chairs, rugs and curtains. She often brings a tea along with her on route to her library shed, and she spends a lot of time in the space, curling up with a book and a hot beverage.

This isn’t the first account I have seen on Instagram in which someone repurposes a garden shed for similar reasons. I know I’ve seen at least one other woman do something of the same idea with a shed in her yard, and hers is even more snazzy than the woman I first mentioned.

Seeing what these women have been able to do with a basic garden shed in such a creative context is, in my opinion, amazing. It goes to show you how anything, really, can become something so much more than its original state with the help of some creativity and artistry, and, furthermore, encourages me to contemplate just how much potential a basic shed can have.
