Trump’s Military Ban

I was absolutely appalled to learn that Donald Trump recently announced that transgender persons will be prohibited from serving in the US military.

On July 26th Trump tweeted a series of statements in regards to his discriminatory ban:

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you”.

This new Trump policy opposes a policy Obama implemented when he served as president of the United States of America, and quite honestly, Trump’s recent declaration to prevent transgender individuals from serving and protecting America in the military is a blatant example of legalized discrimination.

Countless recognized individuals took to Twitter to express their dismay in accordance to Trump’s discrimination. Joe Biden tweeted: “Every patriotic American who is qualified to serve in our military should be able to serve. Full stop” and was supported by other celebrities such as Caitlyn Jenner: “There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them?”

I fail to comprehend how an individual’s identity is relevant to their choosing to risk their own lives in order to serve and protect a country, and based on the majority of public reaction, many other persons are in agreement with my own opinion.

In 2016 Trump had the audacity to declare that he is “a real friend” to the LGBTQ community and I would argue that there fails to be a stronger example of contradiction and hypocrisy than Trump’s current behaviour after making such a declaration.

Trump’s recent ban against transgender persons is discriminant, hateful, ignorant and absolutely unacceptable, and it is my hope that unity can occur within society to challenge this policy.
