For one of my public relations classes, I was asked to create a mock media release regarding the opening of a new sports and recreation facility in Calgary. The scenario is entirely fabricated, but I thought I would post the assignment in hopes of educating others about what a media/news/press release consists of. The knowledge I have of composing media releases is a result of my Writing Principles class and my professor, so I would like to credit this assignment and its contents to her.

GET MOVING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON AT CALGARY’S NEW SPORTS AND RECREATION COMPLEX
3 OCTOBER 2017, CALGARY: On December 2nd, 2017, Calgary’s new sports and recreations complex will open its doors to the public from 7:00am to 10:00pm every day of the week. Located at 5505 Fourth Avenue in Calgary, the R. Simpson Sports and Recreation Complex contains 4 basketball courts, 15 indoor activity rooms, 1 Olympic sized swimming pool, 1 recreation pool and 1 ice surface suitable for figure skating and hockey. The complex, named after prominent Calgary resident Ralph Simpson, hopes to attract basketball teams to participate in tournaments, with the City Basketball Association, the Calgary Hockey Association, the Swimmers Club and the Simpson Foundation being the four community groups that helped with the development of the building.
“I wish I had access to a complex like this when I was growing up,” said Joe Smith, major of Calgary. “As an athlete myself, I really believe this state-of-the-art facility will encourage and increase participation in sporting activities in Calgary. I want this complex to be a place for our community members to be active and have fun at the same time.”
The sports facilities, equipped with large male and female change rooms, are located on the East side of the facility, while the West side includes a public library equipped with computers and free Wi-Fi throughout the building, a coffee shop, and 3 community rooms (Community Room 1, Community Room 2 and the Simpson Community Room). The basketball courts and the ice surface will be available for rental at 6:00am each morning after the complex’s opening, and recreational programming for the City of Calgary will begin on December 4th, 2017.
For further information, city residents can visit the complex’s website at www.calgary.ca/simpsoncomplex or can speak to a facility employee by calling (312) 555-5555.
