I’m inclined to categorize my sense of humour as slightly demented with a hint of immaturity, so you can imagine my delight when I sat down and watched an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and learned the humour of the show matches my own quite well.

I had heard about this show several times before I finally got around to watching it. It stars Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, an immature but smart NYPD detective in Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct; Andre Braugher as the remarkably stern Captain Raymond Holt; Stephanie Beatriz as the extremely intimidating Rosa Diaz; Terry Crews as the timid yet fearful Terry Jeffords; Melissa Fumero as the over-achiever Amy Santiago; Joe Lo Truglio as the hopeless romantic Charles Boyle; and Chelsea Peretti as the dry and sarcastic Gina Linetti.

The cast works incredibly well together in their roles as detectives for the NYPD (with Gina being a receptionist for the Precinct), and their dynamic and drastically different personalities come together to make for some hilarious scenarios each episode. Samberg has always been someone who can make me laugh uncontrollably (Hot Rod remains to be one of my favourite films to date), and his attempts to break Braugher’s professionalism and no-nonsense attitude is hysterical.

Not only is the show entertaining and hilarious, but it touches on some pretty controversial concepts in a mature and proactive way. Captain Raymond Holt (Braugher), for example, frequently makes mention of the adversities he encountered as a black, homosexual detective when he first entered the force, and Rosa (Beatriz) and Amy (Fumero) encounter sexism and discrimination because they are female detectives in a typically male-dominated industry.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is goofy, bold, forward and oddly relatable. If you haven’t seen it, give one episode a go. I watched six episodes of season one in one shot.
