Have you heard of wildflower-filled winter coats?

Winter coats are a must for any Canadian. They’re a must for anyone who lives in a chilly region, but here in Canada, it can get pretty damn frosty, so a warm, reliable winter coat is essential.

A lot of winter coats nowadays are filled with either plastics or animal materials. We arguably don’t give a whole lot of thought to what is inside our coats as opposed to how warm and/or functional they are, but a winter jacket line from a company called Pangaia might have you thinking about the filling a little more.

Pangaia, a sustainable fashion company, has recently unveiled a project they’ve been working at for a decade, says an article from The Good News Network. Pangaia has developed “’flowerdown’ jackets (which) are filled with wildflowers that have been sourced from restoration projects helping to support butterfly species,” the article explains. Pangaia says “that they have spent the last 10 years developing the patented technology as a sustainable and cruelty-free alternative to goose-down insulation.”

So, what exactly are these jackets made from, then?

“The vegan coat is filled with a fully biodegradable material made out of certifiably hypoallergenic wildflowers, biopolymer, and a specialized aerogel that keeps the material insulated and waterproof, but still breathable,” the article explains.

As for where the wildflower filling is derived from?

“’The wild flowers we source are from areas which contribute to habitat restoration, whilst helping to conserve a species of local butterflies,’ the company told Tree Hugger. ‘This kind of regenerative agriculture results in a reduction of greenhouse gas production (12 tons of CO2 per hectare of plant material). The method also helps to preserve groundwater, as it doesn’t require irrigation,’” the article states.

Not only are these jackets environmentally sustainable and ethical, but they’re also fashionable. The only catch is that they cost about $550. Minus the price tag, I think these coats are an absolutely fantastic idea.
