The other evening I decided to hunker down and watch Don’t Breathe via Netflix. The movie was under Netflix’s Critically Acclaimed Movies category, and since I often am disappointed by the platform’s selection of horror flicks, I was hoping this one would be good.
Thankfully, this time I was not disappointed.
Don’t Breathe is a “2016 American horror thriller film produced and directed by Fede Álvarez, co-produced by Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, and co-written by Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues. The film stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto, and Stephen Lang, and focuses on three friends who get trapped inside a blind man’s house while breaking into it. The film was produced by Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing,” the film’s Wikipedia page explains.
If you read the description and thought to yourself, ‘what kind of person robs a blind man,” you’re not alone in your thoughts. I thought the same thing while watching the movie, but rest assured, as the plot progresses and more about his character is unveiled, you don’t feel so bad for him. Trust me.
I will be honest and admit that when I read the synopsis prior to watching the movie, I didn’t think it was going to be anything good. I actually thought it would suck, given the whole teenagers robbing a blind man thing, but holy moly, this movie shocked me in more ways than one. The suspense that subtly builds and eventually climaxes at the movie’s peak is undeniable, and more than once I found myself with my hands in fists, waiting to have the shit scared out of me.
Everything about this movie is representative of what a solid horror movie consists of. The acting, the story, the plot twists … this horror movie is one I would recommend any day of the week.
