I recently viewed a reel via Instagram depicting a middle-aged woman sharing publicly an experience she recently endured in West Vancouver, British Columbia. Her face is severely bruised and swollen, and it is evident that she is in pain. She explains how she attended a firework display and took the bus from the event to return to her car. While riding on the bus, she says a group of individuals began harassing and verbally abusing the driver. The woman states she began recording the incident on her cellphone in case the situation escalated in any way. One member of the group was unhappy to be filmed, and upon exiting the bus at her designated stop to walk to her parked car, the woman says she was struck from behind and landed face-down on the street. She is concussed and her nose is broken, and the purpose of her video is to propose a significant question: how can we strive to be good people and help others in need when tragedy could be the outcome?
The state of the world we find ourselves living in is not a pleasant one – it is anything but, and evil seems to be sweeping through the masses at an alarming speed. Considering how violent and unpredictable our world, and furthermore, people, have become, how do we determine whether or not to assist someone who needs our help at the risk of our own life?
I always try to help others, and I have had a few eye-opening experiences of my own in the past while when trying to intervene in certain situations for the benefit of someone else. I’m not alone in these experiences, and so the question remains; how can we best determine right from wrong when our own morality could become our very demise?
