I was absolutely delighted to learn that a rugby documentary was recently added to Netflix. Rugby is popular and is well-known around the world, but here in North America, I sometimes feel as though the sport is slept on a wee bit. It doesn’t garner the fans nor the attention that the NFL or NHL do, but personally, I find it the most exciting sport on the planet, both to play and to watch.
I’m a bit biased given my own history with the game, but anyone who has played rugby will arguably tell you the same.
Six Nations: Full Contact is a documentary series about the Six Nations rugby torunament that occurs annually in Europe. The tournament hosts six teams yearly; Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Italy and England, and this series covered the 2023 torunament.
I really enjoyed the documentary in the sense that it focused equally on the game itself as it did its players. Each episode focuses on a team and a couple of players, and some of the players share their own personal backgrounds as well.
Keeping in mind that the players on these six teams are the best in the world, the rugby shown in the series is definitely the best and most exciting footage I’ve ever seen myself. These men go above and beyond the limitations of their own bodies and minds to play this game, and the passion they share for it is unmatched.
I learned quite a bit about some of these players, as well as some of the differences in the game here in Canada when compared to Europe. Ireland’s team is the best in the world, although the other teams in the Six Nations are not far behind.
If you are a fan of rugby, please watch this documentary and shine some deserved light on this wonderful sport.
