My nose and I encountered a rather rough force over the weekend. I was at our chicken barn unloading large plastic bins from the box of my truck; these bins have a lid that opens like a flap, and they were on their side lying in the back of my truck. I managed to get one of the bins out fine, and upon attempting to unload the second, a forceful gust of wind decided to come sweeping through and fling the lid of the bin open rather violently, directly into my face.
I honestly didn’t even know what the hell had happened. One minute I was pulling a bin out of my truck, and the next I was looking at the ground.
I didn’t realize initially that the bridge of my nose took the brunt of the hit until it started pouring blood like a damn faucet. My sister has quite a bit of medical knowledge she has built up over the years, so I went to her and asked her to fix me up. She did, to the best of her ability, but because I wasn’t entirely sure of what to look for in the chance I might be dealing with a broken nose, I thought I would share what I’ve learned recently with all of you.
Ultimately, the only guaranteed way to diagnose a broken nose is via X-ray. But, there are symptoms that are commonly affiliated with a broken nose, and these symptoms include:
- A bloody nose immediately or soon after the impact that doesn’t let up for a bit (mine bled for about ten minutes)
- Swelling and pain affecting the nose and the face area
- Brusining appearing across the nose and under the eyes
- Hearing a crackling sound when you try to move or shift your nose to the left or right
- Difficulty or pain when breathing
Keep these signs in mind if you, like me, find yourself trying to determine whether or not your schnoz is cracked.
