President’s Choice Flake Outs croissant donuts: are they worth buying?

I don’t mind donuts, but they’ve never been a personal favourite. I much prefer other sorts of pastries to donuts, for example, cookies or cupcakes, to name a couple, and while I have sampled some over the years that were decent, I’m just not a huge donut gal.

My sister would throat-punch me if she heard me say that. She would arguably kill for a solid donut.

I went grocery shopping at my local No Frills a few days ago and was intrigued by a colourful display in the baking aisle. Upon further inspection, I was surprised to see that these boxes were half-price; and furthermore, that their contents were a hybrid croissant donut.

I’ve been seeing and hearing a fair bit about these croissant donuts, so I ended up grabbing two boxes. One in the double-chocolate flavour, and the other in the churro flavour. If they weren’t half-price, I wouldn’t have bothered, but I’m Dutch so I really cannot pass up a good deal.

A croissant donut is pretty much exactly as it sounds – a pastry in the shape of a traditional donut with a hole in the centre, but the pastry within the donut has the consistency of a croissant, meaning it’s full of light, buttery layers.

The double chocolate flavour is decent, and it tastes exactly like a chocolate croissant, as it should. The churro flavour is better than the chocolate, in my opinion, but I found both to be lacking a bit in terms of flavour. I’ve certainly had better churro-flavoured things in the past, and the same goes for the double-chocolate variety. I did end up warming them up slightly in the microwave which improved their overall taste, but honestly, I wouldn’t rush to buy them again.

There are two other flavours I didn’t try – blueberry crumble, if I’m remembering correctly, and Madagascar vanilla. If they’re still in stock next time I visit No Frills, I might try the other flavours, but I don’t think they’re worth their price, half-off or not.

  1. Thanks. My local Superstore has the blueberry and vanilla in their Flashfood and I didn’t know what they were. Based on your post I’ll skip them.

  3. i think these flake outs are awful and expensive . They taste like bread with frosting. I can purchase 6 apple fritters from Tim Hortons for same price that they are charging for these so called croissant donuts.
