I’ve mentioned before here on my blog how I took a rather lengthy hiatus from reading on a regular basis. When I finally smartened up and decided to get back into the swing of things, one of the first books I read was A Court of Thorns and Roses, and, naturally, the entire series after the first book. Once I finished these, a good friend of mine recommended the Throne of Glass series, which I’m working my way through, and most people who are familiar with works by Sarah J. Maas are also familiar with works by Rebecca Yarros, which brings me to today’s topic – Fourth Wing and how damn good it is. Hot damn.
I read Fourth Wing by Yarros with my book club, but because it’s fucking excellent I went ahead and bought the next two books in the series. I’m currently reading Queen of Shadows by Maas, and once I’m through the Throne of Glass series, I plan to return to finishing all of the Fourth Wing texts. If you are a fan of fantasty to any extent, Fourth Wing is for you.
The book tells the story of a young woman named Violet who is the daughter of one of the greatest commanders of a dragon (yes, you read that correctly) army and has lived her life in accordance with her mother’s expectations. She is everything her mother is not; scholarly, quiet, frail and most certainly not a coveted dragon rider. Her mother, however, expects nothing but dragon riding greatness from her youngest daughter, thus Violet is forced into a position she is absolutely unsure of.
This book is like a culmination of the best elements and tropes from other fantasy texts I have read, and it’s bloody brilliant. I was hooked from the first page, and I cannot wait to continue the series with the remaining book, and a fourth on the way.
