In yesterday’s post, I wrote about the book that our book club recently discussed and reviewed collectively. The gals in our book club all play on the rugby team I am involved with, meaning I know them well, and they’re dear friends of mine.
After we concluded our book club, two of the gals informed the group they had a little something for all of us present. My friend Hannah recently returned from playing international rugby league in Europe (yeah, she’s pretty fucking cool), and while in Wales, she picked up the cutest candle I have ever seen. It’s arguably also the smallest candle I have ever seen, and it resides within a gorgeous, hand-painted, heart-shaped little bowl. I was absolutely blown away by the gesture, because it indicated thoughtfulness and sincerity, two values I tremendously appreciate.
My other friend, Jheri, is quite artistic, and she informed the group that she recently started experimenting with stamps. This woman went ahead and made, for each of us, personalized stamps featuring our names as well as an animal unique to all of us. She hand-drew the stencils and then converted them into stamps, and the idea is to use them to mark all of our personal books because we loan them out to each other so often.
Another friend of mine, Kaiden, hosted book club. She ensured we had a welcoming and comfortable space to meet, and she made all of us themed mocktails to go with the book we had just finished together. She even adorned the mocktails with a delightful sugary rim, and we all enjoyed them.
I felt so seen and appreciated by these friends in this moment, and it is not something I have felt for a little while. Their kindness reminded me of how damn important solid girlfriends are, in addition to demonstrating how a kind gesture doesn’t have to involve ludicrous amounts of money. To be seen is a glorious feeling, and it is one I will always cherish and ruminate on whenever it occurs.
I’m so grateful for these gals that I met playing the sport we all love, and I am privileged to have such wonderful friends.
