Thinking about starting a blog?

Since I began my own blog several years ago, people occasionally ask me how I went about the process. Questions like ‘how did you come up with the name?’ and ‘which platform site do I use?’ are common ones directed my way, but others ask how and why I keep up with my own blog, ontheedgeofeverything, daily.

When I started this blog back in university, I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going with it, or if there was even a general direction I was hoping to take it in. I sort of thought to myself one day that starting a blog might be a good way for me to practice my writing, and it took off from there.

As for how I came up with the name of my blog, I figured the name should somehow encapsulate the subject matter, which is evidently a random assortment of topics. So, I came up with ontheedgeofeverything, purchased the name of the site through a personal WordPress plan (which is super affordable), picked a design template that appealed to me, and kept on writing.

Why do I post daily? Mainly to keep my writing skills sharp, but also to keep my general knowledge of different topics slightly elevated. By posting to my blog daily, I force myself to think creatively in order to designate new topics to write about. This often means doing a bit of research about different things, exploring current events, and educating myself in the process.

Plus, I enjoy writing, so it’s sort of a win-win situation.

If you have ever considered beginning a blog of your own, I strongly encourage you to pursue those thoughts and put them into action. Blogging is something many of us can successfully do, and once you determine what it is you want your blog to be about, it’s smooth sailing.

  1. Good post. I’ve been “blogging” for years. The quotes are because most of those years was a blog sitting there without a blogger (me) maintaining it. Now comes the question of do I continue with a blog that has morphed in purpose three or four times or restart.

  2. I admire your commitment to writing every day. I also started a blog a few years ago to flex my writing skills in a non-technical way. It has been a very good experience, but I do have to work at it to post a few times a month.

    1. Hi there! Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words. I applaud you for your commitment to your own blog as well, and I absolutely relate to having to work at it. It can be pretty frustrating at times, but like you said, it’s a creative medium and a beneficial one.
