There seems to be an unspoken rule pertaining to hair washing. While I’ve never heard a professional hairstylist outright say that holding out for as long as possible between washes is beneficial for hair, I know a lot of people that firmly believe this. And, really, the mentality makes sense; anything that undergoes excessive or prolonged washing tends to diminish in its quality over time.
When I was younger, I used to wash my hair daily. I did this for a few different reasons; when working outside on the farm in the middle of summer you tend to get pretty sweaty, as does your hair; I believed it to be a necessary practice; and I thought washing hair everyday was something everyone did. Once I became a bit older, though, I discovered that not too many people were doing what I was doing.
Obviously, a hair washing schedule tremendously varies depending on the sort of hair in question. If you have dandruff or a lot of oil in your hair, you arguably need to wash it more often than someone who has very fine and dry hair. But, because I was curious, I decided to do a bit of an experiment and see if delaying washes improved the overall health of my hair.
I’ve been experimenting with this hair washing concept now for a few months, and while I’m not an expert and this is entirely personal and subjective to me, I have noticed that refraining from washing my hair more than necessary seems to be doing it a favour. Have I noticed an exceptional difference in my hair? No. But I do find my hair to be healthier in general, so perhaps there is some truth to this belief.
