What the heck is SIBO?

When I first heard of the term SIBO, I thought I was hearing things, to be honest, so not to worry if you figured your eyes were deceiving you when you read the title of today’s post.

SIBO is an acronym that stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and I’m about to give you the scoop.

I’ve been dealing with moderate to severe gut issues for literally the past 12 years, and I’ve seen many doctors and specialists and have had just about every test done in the damn book. Have I, in all of my medical endeavours, actually received a solid diagnosis? Nope.

My aunt mentioned SIBO to my mom, and after my mom looked into it, she told me to do the same to see if my symptoms match. They sure do, and while I haven’t yet been diagnosed with SIBO, my problems seem to fit the description.

Here is some general information pertaining to SIBO from www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

“Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as the presence of excessive bacteria in the small intestine. SIBO is frequently implicated as the cause of chronic diarrhea and malabsorption. Patients with SIBO may also suffer from unintentional weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and osteoporosis. A common misconception is that SIBO affects only a limited number of patients, such as those with an anatomic abnormality of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract or those with a motility disorder. However, SIBO may be more prevalent than previously thought.”

There is testing and treatment available to diagnose SIBO, and if you’re in Ontario like I am, there are multiple clinics Toronto-way that specifically treat it.

Perhaps if you, too, seem to have some sort of mystery stomach condition, SIBO may provide you with some answers. Mention it to your doctor if you think you may have SIBO.
