Wasting time is not exactly something most of us strive to achieve. Nowadays, most people would probably relate to the idea that they can’t get enough accomplished in a given day no matter how hard they try, therefore the act of deliberately wasting time isn’t one, I imagine, that is heavily sought after.
Unfortunately, though, despite our reluctance to waste time, a lot of us unwillingly engage in the practice anyway. I firmly believe smartphones are at the root of the time-wasting debacle, and while there are certainly other factors that come into play, I would bet money that smartphones and the endless distractions they offer are the biggest culprits in the equation of how to abstain from wasting time.
How often do you open your phone, click on the Facebook, Instagram or TikTok app with the intention to scroll for a few minutes, only to realize your intended few minutes turned into 20, or 30? It happens to the best of us, and I for one cannot stand when I realize how much damn time I’ve wasted looking at my phone. I figure that’s why iPhones now show you your daily screen time; you’re able to see exactly how much time you spend looking at specific apps, and analyzing a screen time report can be a rather humbling experience.
One solution for refraining from wasting time via smartphone is to enable time restrictions for certain apps. I used to have one set up for my Instagram app, and once I hit 30 minutes on the app in a single day, it blocked my access to it. You can create these restrictions for just about any app, I believe, and the allotted time you give yourself per app is entirely up to you.
Smartphones are great, but they’re also not so great in different contexts. Use them wisely.
