I honestly feel as though cottage cheese is the recipient of a lot of unwarranted flack. I’m not entirely sure why, but the majority of people seem to be repulsed by the stuff and would rather stomach rancid lunchmeat.
You’re quite welcome for that gnarly visual.
I wouldn’t say I’m cottage cheese’s number one fan, but I really don’t mind it. I don’t find it to have a ton of flavour, to be honest, and it’s a phenomenal source of protein. I used to eat it with salt and pepper, and my dad actually enjoyed it with some tomatoes.
If you cannot get past the idea of eating cottage cheese on its own, perhaps you can jive with the idea of it being incorporated into, wait for it, pancakes. Yes, you read that correctly, and the following recipe for Cottage Cheese Pancakes comes from momsdish.com.
“Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups cottage cheese
- 4 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 cup canola oil for frying
“Instructions:
- Combine all ingredients in the following order – cheese, eggs, vanilla extract, sugar, baking powder and flour. Mix in each time you add an ingredient.
- Preheat a skillet with canola oil on a medium heat. Fry the cottage cheese pancakes on each side until golden brown.
- Serve with maple syrup or jam, while they are still hot and the cheese inside is melted.
- Note: This recipe makes roughly 2 pancakes per serving. I used a large cookie scoop (3 tbsp) for each pancake. The full recipe yields ~16 pancakes,” the recipe states.
These bad boys account for 20 per cent of your daily protein intake, in addition to a healthy amount of Vitamin A, calcium and iron. I imagine they’re filling as hell, and they seem reasonably simple to prepare with minimal ingredients.
Perhaps cottage cheese can make a comeback.

Cottage cheese on its own is horrible, in my opinion. As an ingredient in better dishes? I can see it. Cottage cheese is the avocado of the dairy world.

Truth be told, there’s a dish in Eastern Europe called syrniki — essentially cottage cheese pancakes. But from the recipes I’ve read, there’s a higher proportion of cheese compared to flour.
