Protein oatmeal: yay or nay?

Anytime I think of oatmeal, I can’t help but recall an episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine during which Captain Holt is tasked with officiating a wedding. He is struggling to come up with material for his speech, and in a desperate attempt to deliver a somewhat poetic line about marriage, he offers: “Love is like oatmeal. It sustains you.”

Perhaps a bit simple in its meaning, but the man has a point.

I enjoy oatmeal as much as the next person, but I can’t say I’m an avid fan of the plain version. It’s just too bland, and, yes, while the option exists to add in whatever ingredients you like, I prefer to go with the ones that are already flavoured, my favourite being the maple and brown sugar variety.

While grocery shopping a few months ago, I saw that Quaker came out with a protein oatmeal. I’m often trying to incorporate more protein into my diet, especially during the rugby season, so I decided to give it a try. I purchased the maple and brown sugar flavour as well as the banana nut, and so far, the maple and brown sugar tremendously exceeds the latter in terms of flavour. The banana nut one isn’t bad, but it’s simply not as tasty as the former. The nuts throw me off, and if you try it, you might know what I mean.

One pack boasts 6 grams of protein, and the taste of the oatmeal is not affected by the protein whatsoever. There is no chalky texture or aftertaste that occurs with a lot of protein powders, and it’s incredibly easy to make. Sometimes I’ll mix an egg in for an extra protein boost, and other times I’ll just eat two packs.

I do like this oatmeal, and while it isn’t the most affordable, if you’re struggling to consume more protein, this oatmeal might be your answer.
