My husband and I came to the jarring realization a few months ago that despite being together for 13 years, we have not once gone to the theatre to see a movie together.
I’m not proud of this observation, nor am I asking for anyone’s judgment on the matter. Rather, when Blaine and I acknowledged this glaring error, we agreed that the next movie that releases and looks enticing is one we will venture out to see together.
Blaine and I both love animals, so when Blaine saw a trailer for Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast, he inquired as to whether or not this would be a suitable title for our first movie date together. Before I agreed, I made sure to determine that the other main character in this movie, who happens to be a dog, does not meet his untimely, tragic end, and once I learned that, we were ready to rip.
That is not a spoiler, by the way. The producers of the film have made a public assertion that the dog is not killed.
The movie follows Brad Pitt (James) and his retired military combat dog, Odin, as they take a trip to rural Alaska together to enjoy their retirement. When their trip comes to an end, a rather unfortunate event occurs that prevents the two from properly leaving this particular area of Alaska, so the two of them trek across about 60 miles of Alaska wilderness to get back to a main road and hopefully secure a ride out of there.
This movie is a story of the unbreakable bond and loyalty that exists between a dog and its owner, and it emphasizes the trust required to form such a bond. Heart of the Beast is absolutely excellent, and while I still bawled like a fucking baby, I would recommend it to anyone who owns a dog.
