The Disproportionate Perception of Pride Month

In case you’re unaware, the month of June has been recognized as Pride month. June was selected out of all months within the calendar year to celebrate individualistic pride to commemorate the Stonewall Riots that occurred at the conclusion of June in 1969. Throughout Pride month, many events and celebrations are held to acknowledge sexual diversity and furthermore the positive efforts of the LGBTQ community in a global spectrum, and I personally feel as though the concept of Pride month is quite benevolent.

Not all persons are in agreement with my interpretation of Pride month, however. I have come across numerous articles and reports of certain individuals condescending and scrutinizing the idea of celebrating diverse sexual orientations throughout the month of June, and I find this extremely disheartening. Granted, all persons are able to possess and express their opinions on matters, though the choice to be blatantly ignorant and discriminant towards Pride months and the LGBTQ community overall is simply unacceptable.

Possessing a minor in Women and Gender studies has undoubtedly opened my eyes to the amount of ignorance that exists in regards to the LGBTQ community. Persons refuse to alter their opinions of diverse sexual orientations and opt to remain diligent in their prejudice and hurtful perceptions of alternative lifestyles. Voicing an opinion is one thing, but perpetuating inaccurate interpretations of the LGBTQ community and reiterating discriminant vocabulary and stereotypes towards these individuals is another.

At the end of the day, we are all human beings. Regardless of who we are or what we sexually identify as, we are all humans, and all humans deserve basic respect and human rights. Is this too vast to comprehend in reality?

I hope Pride month continues to exist and furthermore progress in future years, because, quite honestly, all persons deserve to be recognized for being happy with who they are.
