I recently heard the song Praying by Kesha and I was genuinely taken aback by how emotional and furthermore passionate this particular song is. I learned that Kesha’s newest album titled Rainbow contains many songs that are relevant to her dilemma with her vindictive producer Dr. Luke, and I did some research to learn more about said dilemma in order to better understand the situation. This information comes from an article on TheRollingStone.com.
Kesha sued her producer, Dr. Luke, in 2014 in an attempt to void her contract with him. Kesha wished to sever all ties to Luke because she stated that he had sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused Kesha so significantly she came close to losing her life. Luke countersued in response to Kesha’s claim, and on February 19th Kesha was denied the ability to produce music that was not affiliated with Luke and her Sony Music record label.
Following Kesha’s inability to free herself from Luke’s restraints, countless celebrities and fans aided her by showing their support in hopes of “freeing” Kesha from her bind to her record label.
Kesha, in the midst of this legal conflict, stated “All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused. This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract — it was never about getting a bigger, or a better, deal. This is about being free from my abuser. I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser”.
On August 11th, 2017, Kesha released her newest album Rainbow, and the reception by fans and listeners has been tremendous. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, and although I have yet to listen to all of the tracks on the album, Praying is a truly beautiful song. From my own understanding of the situation between Luke and Kesha, Kesha did produce this album whilst still tied to Luke, however it is a truly emotional comeback for what she has undergone. Apparently Sony Music has dropped Luke from their production and he will therefore not be an affiliate to this album. I hope her album continues to prosper, and the effort she put into this album can be perceived as an inspiration to any individual that feels trapped in an abusive relationship.
