Cheerleading is something I personally have never had much interest in. By no means am I attempting to convey the idea that I don’t care about the sport, because it has similarities to gymnastics which I did when I was younger. Rather, I’ve never been involved in cheerleading myself, therefore it isn’t something I devote a lot of time to.
That being said, I decided to watch Netflix’s Cheer after hearing and reading so many good things about it, and since completing the six-episode season, I can say with utter certainty that cheerleading has earned my complete and utmost respect and attention.
This series follows the Navarro College cheerleading team and the trials and tribulations they encounter as they prepare for the coveted title of the Daytona Beach cheer competition. The team, coached by Monica Aldama in Corsicana, Texas, is made up of all sorts of individuals who come from a variety of backgrounds and lifestyles, and Monica’s dedication to these kids is absolutely outstanding. The commitment, effort, and care she invests in her cheerleaders is absolutely remarkable, and it’s evident she knows what she is doing in the realm of cheer as her Navarro team has claimed the top title on 14 separate occasions.
While I admire and enjoy each and every member of the Navarro cheer team, I think I would have to say that Morgan and Jerry are my favourites. I guarantee if you watch the show you will develop favourites of your own, but these two stand out for me, likely because I can relate to them.
If you’re unfamiliar with competitive cheerleading, watch this show. The physicality of this sport, in combination with pain, injuries, grit and infinite endurance, is 100 per cent worthy of the respect it demands. I think a lot of us would e surprised to see just how damn difficult this sport is.
