Mother’s Day is going to look quite a bit different for many of us this year as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. But, because this observation is an obvious one, I thought it might be nice to overlook this fact for a moment and instead celebrate the concept of today for moms all over the world.
Regardless of how you are celebrating Mother’s Day this year, the essence of today remains the same – it is an occasion to recognize and appreciate our mothers and mother figures for everything they do for us, although this recognition and appreciation is one I strive to acknowledge every day.
My mom really is a hero in my eyes. Not only does she put her family before herself time and time again, she does so without hesitation or complaint. She embodies everything motherhood stands for, and I am so, so fortunate to call her my mom.
Ever since my mom battled and beat breast cancer (on two separate occasions), Mother’s Day has taken on more meaning for my family and me. We are so blessed to still have her in our lives, and I remind myself daily to never take her for granted considering everything she has been through in her life.
I think it is marvellous that despite how different all of our mothers are, Mother’s Day serves as an opportunity to collectively come together to celebrate some of the most important women in our lives. Mother figures can resemble a variety of different forms, and whether she be your biological mother, adoptive mother, foster mother, stepmother or has no familial relation, whoever it is in your life that you acknowledge as your mom, take some time today to let them know how much they mean to you, even if they are no longer with us here on Earth.
Here’s to mothers everywhere, today and every day.
