Making the most of COVID-19 birthdays

I think it is safe to say that anyone celebrating a birthday in the midst of the Coronavirus outbreak is feeling a little underwhelmed with their special day. Social distancing and an inability to participate in large gatherings certainly makes the concept of celebration a little difficult, therefore a lot of us who have had a recent birthday likely can’t say it will be one to remember.

Blaine celebrated his 26th birthday on Monday, and mine is in a couple of days. We always do something for our birthdays together, like go out for a nice dinner, but since this won’t be happening this year, we have had to make the most of the situation and celebrate in limited means.

If you have someone in your life that has a birthday coming up, I urge you to think of some innovative ways to make their day special. It could be something as simple as picking up the phone and singing the happy birthday song to them, or FaceTiming them to “see” them on their special day. If you have some spare time, perhaps making them their favourite treat and dropping it off on their doorstep could be a way to make their day a little more special.

It might be difficult to make someone feel recognized on their birthday in a pandemic, but it is possible with a little creativity and effort. Do a little bit of brainstorming to determine how you could help someone to make the most of their birthday in these trying times and witness how much of an impact you could make on them this year after all.

Those of us who have a birthday in this pandemic may not want to remember it, but with a little creativity and outside-the-box thinking, perhaps you can make it one they will want to remember.
