If you read the title of today’s post and thought to yourself, what in the fuck is seed cycling, please do not be alarmed. I had a similar reaction when I first heard this terminology, and no, it doesn’t have anything to do with farming, which is what I figured.
To give you some context, I recently had an appointment with my naturopath. I’m seeing her to assist me with my Lyme symptoms, my digestive issues, and, a recently developed issue to add to my plethora of ailments, seriously dicked hormones. I was on the pill for about ten years and stopped using it because the estrogen levels in my body were through the damn roof. Given my mom’s personal history of breast cancer, elevated estrogen is not something I want to have, so I stopped using birth control.
Since stopping the pill, the physical and mental effects have been anything but pleasant, hence why I am seeing a naturopath about it. I had two rounds of bloodwork done and she was able to determine that my estrogen levels are now way too low, as is my progesterone, and my testosterone levels are so low they weren’t even detected in my blood.
My naturopath recommended seed cycling, and here we are. Seed cycling is a practice involving rotation between different types of edible seeds depending on what phase you’re in within your menstrual cycle. It was recommended I start taking flax, pumpkin, sesame and sunflower seeds, two to boost estrogen and two to boost progesterone.
Traditional medicine doesn’t acknowledge seed cycling as a legitimate treatment for hormonal imbalances (shocking, I know), which is likely what you will encounter online if you wish to read more about it.
I’ll keep you posted, and I’m sincerely hoping seed cycling will help get my hormones back on track.
