Identifying your ‘little things’

I think it’s fair to assume that most of us have heard the phrase, “it’s the little things in life,” at least once or twice. We’re told to appreciate small joys and things that bring us happiness that aren’t particularly extravagant, and I think acknowledging these small joys is so important in terms of seeking out happiness.

I thought it would be beneficial to start a small things movement, if you will. Encouraging one another to share our little things with each other is a great way to perpetuate an appreciative attitude, and it may provide someone with inspiration along the way. So, here are a few of my little things.

  1. Going to bed with freshly shaved legs
  2. Curling up in a blanket fresh out of the dryer
  3. The smell of tobacco curing
  4. The stillness of a summer night
  5. Hitting all green lights
  6. Hearing your favourite song come on the radio just as you were thinking about it
  7. Having meals with my family
  8. Watching scary movies with my boyfriend
  9. Having a shower and feeling oh so clean after a really humid day spent outside
  10. Having a good hair day
  11. When my mom makes my favourite foods for dinner
  12. Driving down a country road with the windows down with my dog
  13. Laying down in bed after a long day
  14. Sitting on my back porch with a glass of wine in the summertime
  15. Finding money in a jacket I haven’t worn in a while
  16. Meeting good, friendly people
  17. Helping people
  18. Having a bubble bath in the wintertime
  19. Listening to a thunderstorm
  • What are some of your little things? Do any of mine correlate with your own?
  • I think it would be interesting if we collectively expressed our little things with others. It’s a great conversation starter, and further, it’s a means to familiarize ourselves with each other.
  • Identify your little things, folks. It’s absolutely worth it.
