When it comes to therapy, I would wager that there are more methods available today than ever before. I almost feel as though I’m hearing about a form of therapy for the first time on a monthly basis, and that is not a complaint; I think if we are able to develop and construct therapy practices that are specifically tailored to an individual and their needs, the more the merrier.
I’ve tried a few different types of therapy in my life, and one I recently learned about and actually tried out myself is known as somatic therapy, which is a form of therapy that bases its principles on the idea that both the mind and body can hold onto experiences that may negatively affect our wellbeing, as opposed to a lot of ‘traditional’ therapy, like counselling, that solely focuses on the mind. It’s the notion that trauma can occur both mentally and physically, therefore in order to treat and remove said trauma, both the mind and body require work. You can read more about somatic therapy and what it encompasses here.
Both my mental and physical health have taken a bit of a hit as of late, and I wanted to try out somatic therapy to see if it does, in fact, work, and furthermore, to try and determine how beneficial it might be for myself long-term. I figured I would see what YouTube had to offer, and I tried a Somatic Practice for Trauma and Stress Release video tutorial.
To be honest, when I first started the practices, I felt like an absolute ass and had a hard time taking it seriously. Eventually, though, I forced myself to wise up a bit and actually make the effort to get the most out of the video, and lo and behold, I noticed some differences. I felt calmer, less anxious and less stressed, and my goal is to try and do this routine a few times a week to determine just how much it could help me.
