Here’s how to stay healthy throughout the holiday season

I think it may be safe to say that this year is one in which more of us than usual are trying to determine how to stay healthy. I would wager that a lot of us are abiding by practices and routines that we haven’t before in an attempt to stay healthy and dodge COVID, for example, social distancing, wearing masks and sanitizing like maniacs. And while these practices may be beneficial in deterring the coronavirus from claiming us as its next victim, there are other ways to maintain wellness aside from refraining from touching any public door handles.

Because we have been inundated with rather traditional and obvious ways to avoid getting sick, I thought I would offer some suggestions that work to benefit both our minds and bodies. Mental health, as we know, is just as important as physical health, and having one without the other is a bit of a detriment. Take a look:

  • Drink more water
  • Cook more meals at home
  • Get active
  • Stay in touch with friends, family and loved ones
  • Try meditation
  • Get in touch with your creative side
  • Practice deep breathing exercises
  • Try to walk 10,000 steps each day
  • Substitute a book for Netflix or social media
  • Practice meditating
  • Reflect on three things you are grateful for everyday and write them down
  • Build a budget for financial gain
  • Ensure you’re getting enough sleep
  • Take the time to do things that make you truly happy

These recommendations really are not overly difficult to achieve, and it is likely that I’ve missed some things that some of us might do for wellness. Wellness in itself is subjective; it looks different for everyone. But, the purpose of wellness remains constant regardless of how it is practiced, and I believe it is a practice more of us should undertake for our own benefit.
